Spanish colonists from the Canary Islands (Los Islenos) arrived in St. Bernard in the late 18th Century. Today their story is told in a fascinating museum & village as well as an annual festival! St. Bernard was also home to the final conflict of the War of 1812. The Chalmette Battlefield and Historic Park offers free, guided tours and a must-see battle re-enactment each year.
